Just a quick trick that I have discovered that could help you track and recognize every instance installed from your J2ME application.
I am not speaking about tracking a device as much as tracking a certain instance of your midlet. You can communicate with this instance with a unique number that you have generated right before you stream the jad file to your user. Check this post for more details and code for provisioning and streaming the jad file.
Right before you stream the jad file, do your own database connection to whatever db you want and create a unique number to this Jad file and add it to the bytes that you will stream. For example, if you call this parameter, id and its value is 1 then, you add "id: 1"
On the midlet side and in the code, you can just retrieve this value inside the midlet using this line of code:
String id=this.getAppProperty("id") ;
Then in any communication with the server or with the external world, use this id number to identify who you are talking to.
This can be used for so many purposes, security, monitoring, logging information about yuor midle, etc.
It is worth mentioning that when you add the parameter and its value in the jad file, these parameters are known as user defined paramters. You can also add them from the wireless tool kit to the jad file or even manually if you want.
I found this very useful to make my work consistent and also it helps me provide some generic parametes between my server side and client side without having to hard code it in the midlet itself.

I said, how about some fun (for you and the user as well) in this process. I am thinking aloud, wondering how to get users hooked on to your service as well as ensure that they use it. I may be ambitious and perhaps unclear about details, policy, feasibility, etc., but what the heck, aren't blogs the place for ranting, raving, .... and dreaming ? OK, here goes... Suppose you package a midi player along with your app. Everyday, there's "Fatma's Pick for the day" that the user can enjoy listening to. The trick is that you can get fatma's playlist only if you login and access a couple of things (generate enough accesses for you to study). Now, would this make a difference to the number of users of your service and its easy acceptability ? If it would, I could go on to justify why I suggest the player and midi files and not streaming. September 24th, 2006 at 11:25 AM Gopi, as always, I am impressed :) This is a great idea and I dunno if you realize it or not, but you have raised an interesting point from the educational point of view as well. The reward system for motivating someone to learn. I don't know why you reminded me of an AI lecture that I have attended about using such reward system in machine learning specifically (robotics). For me, I will definitely have fun integrating such a system and implementing it and i can already see it encouraging the use of my system. Actually, as I am writing, I am getting a very nice idea of integrating this. But, unfortuantely, I am planning to test my system as a part of an existing course running in the university so to do this, I need to have the same enthusiasm from the module leader. It is very exciting to hear ideas like this really. I am also very eager to know the answer to why you suggested playing midi rather than streaming? Because , the coming trend or the future trend in mobile learning will involve streaming of lectures and hopefully, it will be more interactive like conferencing :) Thank you for sharing your valuable thoughts and please continue doing that :)
September 27th, 2006 at 03:56 AM Fatma: Yes, you got it ... rewards ! I hope you get all the support you want from the module teacher. I am not sure if you mean you are integrating your app with something like Blackboard .. are you ? On midi vs streaming, two specific reasons: 1. midi file sizes are smaller and would result in lesser download costs for you when you consider this as a "reward". They are probably short enough to be cached on the user device, so you could even think of it as a "push" service, during non-peak hours. From a content perspective, this kind of content has very less copyright related issues and is freely usable and distributable. 2. 3 to 4 min songs in midi have file sizes of about 60 KBytes. That's 41 packets if the mtu is 1500 bytes, which it is, normally. This, compared with about 500 KB or 1 MB is small for a similar duration (mp3) of the music, but then the quality of the music is pathetic (because of the low sampling). Better quality music is much heavier. Streaming will require a wee bit more resources in terms of play out buffers and something more in terms of QoS, etc. I know I am being vague here, but I am trying not to put too many things on the table. Also, I do not know how the applications are written, so it is difficult for me to comment further on streaming. For now, cost is primary since you pay by the byte and you need to keep the "reward spend" really low. Let me know if I am talking sense and we could probably think of integration into Moodle as well. I'll send you a collection of midis offline so you can try a few things out. Cheers Gopi
